January 1 - Saturday 1pm - 3pm Mayor's New Year's Day Levee You are invited to meet and greet Mayor Susan Fennell & Members of Council at the annual New Year's Day Levee from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Atrium at Brampton City Hall. The tradition of the Mayor's Levee began in the 18th century during the reign of King Louis XIV, to reinforce the idea that the sovereign was responsible to the people. A tradition which was brought to Canada by the Governor of New France who would sit on the doorstep of his home on New Year's Day to greet residents. While the custom of the Levee has changed over the years, the intent is the same as it was in the beginning: to show the government's role of public service and extend best wishes for the new year.
